Albert Bierstadt |
Grade 4 Language Arts and Visual Arts Lessons
Throughout the centuries, humans have dreamed of a utopia: a perfect place, a paradise. Yet what is it that makes a utopia, and how might one be depicted? Would you agree with a vision of a utopia created by another person? Students will explore Bierstadt’s Royal Arches, Yosemite Valley, California as an example of an idealized landscape and consider this image as a utopia. In the language arts classroom, students will develop the characteristics of their own perfect place and will write essays about their utopias. In the visual arts classroom, students will explore the different elements of perspective space and mood in landscape painting, then create their own paintings that visually represent the utopias they wrote about in the language art classroom.
