Grade 3 Language Arts and Visual Arts Lessons
Part of the magic of art and literature is how they can transport us to another time and place and evoke strong emotions. For humans across all cultures, certain times of day are associated with certain activities and rituals. In the language arts lesson, students will explore Charles Frederick Kimball’s Twilight at Stroudwater (1879) and read stories that convey the meanings and moods of sunrise and sunset. Students will then write and illustrate their own haikus that evoke the feelings and activities of sunset. In the art class, students will study Twilight at Stroudwater and understand how Kimball found inspiration in nature. Students will explore the color, space, texture, and brushwork in Kimball’s landscape painting, then experiment with these techniques while creating their own watercolor landscape paintings.
